Polishing and Cleaning Techniques

To maintain and improve the reflectivity of your signal mirror, clean it regularly with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can scratch the surface. For polishing, use a specialized polishing cloth or a soft felt buffing wheel with a small amount of polishing compound. Apply gentle pressure and buff the mirror in a circular motion for 10-15 seconds. Repeat this process 2-3 times, then inspect the mirror’s reflectivity. If necessary, repeat the polishing process until the desired level of reflectivity is achieved.

Mirror Alignment and Use

To maximize the effectiveness of your signal mirror, ensure it is held at an angle of 90-120 degrees relative to the sun. This allows the mirror to reflect the sun’s rays directly towards the target, such as a rescuer or aircraft. Use a tripod or other stabilizing device to keep the mirror steady, and take care to maintain a consistent angle and distance from the target.
