Choosing the Right Stems

To select quality dogbane, look for stems that are at least 1/4 inch (6 mm) in diameter, as these will be more suitable for cordage making. The stems should have a woody texture and a smooth, unblemished surface. Avoid stems with excessive branching, as these will be too fragile for cordage making.

Harvesting and Processing

For optimal results, harvest dogbane stems in the late summer or early fall, when the plant is at its peak strength.
