What Constitutes a Non-Typical Entry? Pope & Young considers a non-typical entry in three categories: 1) excessive branching, 2) abnormal points, and 3) unusual symmetry. Excessive branching can include points that are extremely long, large or numerous, and irregularly spaced. Abnormal points are those that are misplaced, misshapen or irregularly formed. Unusual symmetry is any deviation from the typical symmetry and shape of antlers.
Measuring Non-Typical Entries To measure a non-typical entry, hunters and record keepers must use the Pope & Young scoring system, which assigns points to different antler characteristics such as length, circumference, and number of points. For non-typical entries, the scoring system is slightly modified to account for the unique characteristics of the antlers. For example, an excessive branching point may be scored higher than a typical point.
