Treating Heat-Related Illnesses

In hot weather, heat exhaustion and heat stroke are significant risks. If you notice signs of heat exhaustion, such as heavy sweating, pale skin, and dizziness, move the affected individual to a cool, shaded area and have them drink water or an oral rehydration solution. For heat stroke, which is a medical emergency, call for help immediately and cool the individual down using cool compresses or a wet cloth. Monitor their body temperature and remove excess clothing to prevent further heat buildup.

Cooling and Hydration Techniques

Proper cooling and hydration are critical in treating heat-related illnesses. Use a cool compress or a damp cloth to lower the individual’s body temperature. You can also use a spray bottle to spray the individual with water, but be cautious not to soak them. For hydration, give the individual small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution every few minutes. Aim to give at least 1 liter of fluid per hour, but monitor their urine output to ensure they’re not overhydrating.
