When setting up dove decoys, it’s essential to consider the birds’ behavior and flight patterns. Typically, mourning doves and white-winged doves will follow a predictable flight path, often circling or descending towards a specific area. Identifying these patterns through field scouting will help you place your decoys strategically.

For early-season dove hunting, place your decoys in a line or a small cluster, spaced about 5-7 yards apart, with the majority facing the anticipated landing zone. This will create a more natural and inviting environment, encouraging the birds to land and feed. For larger fields or more extensive hunting areas, consider setting up multiple lines of decoys, spaced 10-15 yards apart, to cover a broader area.

Decoy Spread and Shot Placement

When shooting over decoys, aim for a spot 6-8 feet above the decoys and slightly beyond the center of the spread. This will help you compensate for the bird’s flight path and the effects of wind and gravity. For a more precise shot, use a rangefinder or a laser rangefinder to estimate the distance and adjust your aim accordingly.

In areas with dense vegetation or trees, consider setting up decoys near the edge of the cover, rather than directly in the open field. This will help the birds feel safer and more inclined to land, increasing your chances of a successful hunt.
