Choosing the Right Tank Material

When it comes to selecting the perfect tank material for your DIY rainwater collection system, food-grade PVC or HDPE is the way to go. These materials are durable, resistant to corrosion, and safe for storing and using rainwater for drinking, cooking, and irrigation. Look for tanks labeled as “food-grade” or “potable water storage” to ensure they meet your needs. When choosing between PVC and HDPE, consider the environmental conditions your tank will be exposed to. HDPE is more resistant to UV degradation and scratches, while PVC is more cost-effective and easier to work with.

Pipe and Fitting Selection

For the distribution and plumbing of your rainwater collection system, 1/2" or 3/4" food-grade PEX tubing is an excellent choice. PEX tubing is flexible, resistant to freezing, and can withstand both high and low water pressure. When selecting fittings and adapters, choose those made from the same material as your tubing to ensure a leak-free system. Gutter and Downspout Design
