To mitigate this risk, make sure to install the generator outdoors, away from windows, doors, and vents. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends a minimum of 3 feet of clearance between the generator and any combustible materials. Also, ensure that the generator is equipped with a CO alarm and a GFCI-protected outlet.

Proper Installation and Maintenance

A well-maintained generator is less likely to produce CO. Regular maintenance should include checking the air filter, spark plug, and fuel line for any damage or blockages. The generator’s exhaust system should also be inspected to ensure it is functioning correctly. If the generator is not producing the correct voltage or frequency, it may not be burning fuel efficiently, which can lead to increased CO production.

Ventilation and CO Alarm Requirements

When running a generator indoors, it’s crucial to provide adequate ventilation to prevent CO buildup. The International Residential Code (IRC) requires a minimum of 1 square foot of ventilation per 1,000 BTU of generator output. For example, a 5 kW generator would require a minimum of 5 square feet of ventilation. Additionally, install a CO alarm that meets the UL 2034 standard, which is the industry standard for CO alarms.

The alarm should be located in a central location, within 10 feet of the generator, and on the same level as the generator. It’s also essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the CO alarm and generator.
