Ethics of using 7mm PRC for elk — what should hunters consider?

Effective Range and Kinetic Energy

The 7mm PRC (Precision Rifle Cartridge) is a relatively new cartridge that has gained popularity among hunters and long-range shooters. Its effective range for elk hunting is generally considered to be between 300 and 500 yards. At this range, the 7mm PRC’s kinetic energy is substantial, with a muzzle velocity of around 2,950 feet per second and a kinetic energy of approximately 1,350 foot-pounds. This is more than enough to deliver a humane kill, but hunters must still aim for a vital area and ensure proper shot placement.

Bullet Choice and Expansion

When using the 7mm PRC for elk hunting, hunters should choose bullets that are designed for expansion and penetration. A bullet with a high BC (ballistic coefficient) and a weight of at least 145 grains is recommended. The bullet should also be designed to expand quickly to ensure a rapid kill, such as the 7mm PRC’s 140-grain Barnes TSX or the 145-grain Hornady ELD-X. These bullets have been tested to expand to 1.5-1.7 times their original diameter, which is more than enough to ensure a humane kill.

Shot Placement and Ethical Considerations

Regardless of the cartridge or bullet used, hunters must always prioritize shot placement and ensure that they are taking a humane shot. For elk hunting, the most effective shot placement is a well-placed heart-shots or lung-shot. A shot to the brain or spinal cord is also acceptable, but these shots are more challenging to make. Hunters must always consider the elk’s size and the risk of over-penetration, especially in areas with dense vegetation or other obstacles.
