Creating a Portable Solar Still

A plastic sheet can serve as a collection tray for a portable solar still. To create one, you’ll need to dig a hole deep enough to allow for a 2-3 inch layer of sand at the bottom. This sand will act as the wicking medium, drawing water from the surrounding soil to the center of the hole.

Shaping the Still

Place the plastic sheet over the hole, securing it with rocks or weights to create a seal. Use a rock or stick to create a depression in the center of the plastic sheet, forming a cone-shaped collection point. This depression should be deep enough to allow the water to collect and flow towards the center of the still.

Enhancing Efficiency

To enhance the efficiency of your portable solar still, consider the following techniques: place a clear plastic sheet or polyethylene film on top of the still to create a greenhouse effect; cover the still with a dark-colored tarp or blanket at night to retain heat; and use a small stick or twig to create a wick, allowing the sand to draw water to the collection point. Aim to create a still with a ratio of 1:10 (1 part water to 10 parts sand) for optimal results.
