Building a Snow Cave

To build a snow cave, find a spot with deep and compact snow, ideally at a depth of 3-5 feet. Use a shovel to dig a hole that is slightly smaller than the size of the cave you want to create. As you dig, pack the snow at the bottom of the hole to create a solid foundation. Continue digging and packing until you reach the desired height, typically around 6-8 feet. The entrance should be at an angle to prevent snow from falling in.

Safety Considerations

When building a snow cave, it’s essential to consider safety factors. Avoid digging near crevices or overhanging ice formations that could collapse and trap you. Additionally, be mindful of the temperature and humidity levels, as high humidity can cause the snow to melt and make the cave unstable. In extreme cold, it’s also crucial to avoid building a snow cave with a small entrance, as this can lead to carbon monoxide buildup from your body heat and potentially deadly consequences.
