Can you build a survival shelter from volcanic materials?

Gathering Materials

After a volcanic eruption, the surrounding area will be littered with various volcanic materials that can be used for shelter construction. Lava rocks, in particular, are ideal for building due to their hardness and weight. To gather materials, look for areas with high concentrations of lava rocks, such as near the eruption site or in areas with ash and pumice deposits. Collect a mix of large and small rocks, as well as any vegetation that can be used for insulation and roofing.

Shelter Construction

To build a shelter, start by selecting a flat area with good drainage. Clear the site of any debris and create a level surface. Using the largest rocks, create a foundation for the shelter, building a circular or square base that can support the weight of the structure. Next, stack smaller rocks on top of the foundation, using a technique called “dry stacking” to create a sturdy wall. To add extra stability, use smaller rocks to fill gaps between the larger stones.

Roofing and Insulation

For the roof, use a combination of lava rocks and pumice to create a waterproof layer. Start by laying down a layer of pumice, followed by a layer of lava rocks. Repeat this process several times, ending with a layer of pumice to protect the shelter from the elements. For insulation, use any available vegetation, such as grasses or leaves, to line the walls and roof of the shelter. This will help retain body heat and keep the shelter dry.
