How to select a location for a rainwater collection system?

To determine the best location for your rainwater collection system, start by observing the natural slope and water flow of the area. Ideally, you want to find a spot that has a slight incline, around 1-2% grade, to allow water to naturally flow towards the collection area. Look for areas with a slight depression or low spot, as these will naturally collect and channel water. Steer clear of areas with standing water or where water tends to collect.

Considering the Surroundings

When choosing a location, consider the surrounding environment as well. Avoid areas under trees, as fallen leaves and branches can clog your collection system. Also, steer clear of areas with a lot of foot traffic or animal activity, as this can contaminate the water. Consider a location near a natural water source, but not directly adjacent to it, to ensure you’re collecting rainwater rather than surface water. A general rule of thumb is to be at least 10-15 feet away from any potential water sources.

Installing the System

Once you’ve selected a location, mark out the area where you’ll be installing your rainwater collection system. Typically, this will be a circular or square area with a diameter of around 10-20 feet. Make sure the area is clear of any debris or obstacles, and consider adding a slight incline to the collection area to help water flow towards the collection point.
