When transitioning from dove to teal hunting, keep in mind that teal migrate in large numbers and tend to move quickly. Focus on areas with abundant water, such as wetlands, marshes, and shallow lakes. Be prepared to move quickly and quietly, as teal are highly alert birds.

Teal Hunting Tactics

To compensate for teal’s faster flight, use smaller, more agile decoys and adjust your shooting distances accordingly. Aim for a maximum range of 35 yards, as teal can quickly fly out of range. When calling, use a high-pitched, short whistle, such as the “cutting” call, to mimic a distressed teal. This can be especially effective during early September when teal are in high gear.

Scouting and Setting Up

When scouting for teal, look for areas with abundant vegetation, such as cattails, cattail sloughs, and shallow water. Set up your blind in a location where you can see the entire field, but remain concealed from view. Consider using a blind with a narrow entrance to help conceal your scent and movement. Place decoys in a loose, scattered pattern, allowing the teal to easily see and approach them.
