Alligators are ectothermic, meaning their body temperature is regulated by the environment, and as such, they exhibit increased activity when temperatures rise. Research has shown that alligators are most active when water temperatures reach 70-80°F (21-27°C), which typically occurs in late spring and early summer. During this time, they tend to move further in search of food, making them more vulnerable to hunting.

Habitat and Water Level Fluctuations

Seasonal changes in water levels and habitat also influence alligator movement. As water levels fluctuate, alligators often move to areas with more stable water levels or suitable breeding habitats. Hunters can use this information to their advantage by targeting areas where alligators are likely to congregate during these periods. For example, in Florida, alligators tend to move to areas with a water depth of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) in the spring, as this is a prime area for foraging and breeding.

Moon Phase and Hunting Strategy

Studies have also shown that alligator movement is influenced by moon phase, with increased activity during full moon and decreased activity during new moon. Hunters can use this information to plan their hunting strategy, targeting areas with a high concentration of alligators during peak moon phases. For example, in Louisiana, alligator hunters often target areas with a mix of shallow and deep water during full moon, as this tends to attract alligators to the shallower waters in search of prey.
