Research suggests that elk are more likely to respond to a call when it is within their normal vocal range and when it is consistent with their current behavior. In one study, elk responded to bugle calls 75% of the time, but only 25% of the time when presented with an unfamiliar call.

Selecting the Right Call Types

For example, in a valley or a low-lying area, a bull elk may be more likely to bugle, while in a mountainous area, a cow elk may be more likely to respond to a cow call. These calls can be used to mimic different elk behaviors and vocalizations, increasing the effectiveness of blind calling.
