Can the inReach be used for group messaging?

April 5, 2026

Quick Answer

Yes, the inReach can be used for group messaging, with a maximum of 100 contacts and 100 groups, each with a custom name and description.

Setting Up Group Messaging

To set up group messaging on your inReach, navigate to the “Contacts” menu and select “Create Group”. Give your group a name and description, then add up to 100 contacts to the group. You can also add or remove contacts from the group at any time.

Sending Group Messages

Once you’ve created a group, you can send messages to the entire group by selecting the group name from the “Compose Message” screen. You can also send messages to specific contacts within the group by typing their name in the “To” field. Group messages can be up to 160 characters long, and you can include location and emoji icons.

Additional Features and Limitations

Keep in mind that group messaging on the inReach is a premium feature, and requires a satellite subscription. Each message sent to a group will incur the standard satellite messaging rate, which is currently $0.99 per message. Additionally, group messaging is only available on the inReach Explorer+ and inReach Explorer devices. If you’re planning to use group messaging frequently, consider upgrading to a larger storage plan to accommodate more messages and contacts.
