Is it practical to use solar stills for hiking trips?

Choosing the Right Location

When selecting a location for a solar still, look for a spot with direct sunlight, ideally south-facing, and a flat surface. Avoid areas with standing water, as they can be breeding grounds for bacteria and other contaminants. A depression or a shallow hole is ideal, as it allows the still to function more efficiently. The still should be at least 1 meter away from any shade or obstacles to ensure maximum sunlight exposure.

Building the Solar Still

To build a simple solar still, you’ll need a container with a hole in the center, a smaller container to collect water, a rock or weight to weigh down the still, and a piece of plastic or a tarp to cover the top. Dig a shallow hole or create a depression in the ground, place the container with the hole in the center, and cover it with the plastic or tarp. Weigh down the center of the still with a rock to create a condensation effect. Place the smaller container under the hole to collect the condensed water.

Operating the Solar Still

To operate the solar still, wait for the sun to reach its peak and focus its rays onto the plastic or tarp. This process can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the temperature and humidity. The still will begin to produce water as the condensation builds up. Check the still regularly to collect the fresh water and avoid any contamination. A well-designed solar still can provide up to 1 liter of clean water per hour, making it a reliable source of hydration during hiking trips.
