Preventing Corrosion with Cathodic Protection

Cathodic protection is a widely used method to prevent corrosion in steel well casing. This technique involves applying an electric current to the steel casing to drive the reaction in the opposite direction, preventing corrosion. To achieve effective cathodic protection, a sacrificial anode is connected to the well casing, usually made from zinc or magnesium. The anode corrodes instead of the casing, extending the lifespan of the well. In a typical setup, the anode is installed 10-15 feet below the well casing, and the current is monitored to ensure it’s within the specified range of 1-2 mA/foot.

Applying Epoxy Coating for Corrosion Resistance

Applying an epoxy coating to the steel well casing is another effective method to prevent corrosion. Epoxy coatings are available in various thicknesses, typically ranging from 10-20 mils. To achieve optimal results, the coating should be applied in multiple layers, allowing each layer to cure before applying the next. A minimum of three coats is recommended, with the first coat applied directly to the steel surface. The epoxy coating provides a barrier between the steel and the surrounding water, protecting the casing from corrosive substances.

Using Corrosion-Resistant Materials

Using corrosion-resistant materials like PVC or fiberglass is a viable alternative to steel well casing. PVC pipes are particularly popular due to their durability, resistance to corrosion, and ease of installation. When choosing PVC pipes, select those with a minimum thickness of 1.9 inches and a SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) of 35 or higher. Fiberglass pipes are another option, offering excellent corrosion resistance and high tensile strength. However, they are generally more expensive than PVC pipes and require a specialized installation technique.
