Preparing Your Tent for a Bear Encounter

When camping in bear country, it’s essential to take the necessary precautions to avoid attracting bears to your campsite. Keep a clean and tidy camp, store food and trash in airtight containers, and hang them at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet out from the trunk. Make sure your tent is at least 50 yards away from any water source. Keep your bear spray within arm’s reach, but not in a way that could accidentally trigger it.

Using Bear Spray Effectively

If a bear approaches your tent, stay calm and try not to make eye contact. Make yourself look as big as possible by standing up or using a backpack. If the bear continues to approach, use your bear spray when it’s within 6-8 meters (20-25 feet). Aim for the bear’s face, eyes, and nose, and make sure to keep moving backward while spraying. Keep spraying until the bear retreats or is no longer a threat. If you’re in a grizzly bear encounter, be prepared to fight back if the bear continues to approach. For black bears, playing dead is usually the best course of action. In both cases, try to protect your neck and head from the bear’s claws.

After the Encounter

If you use bear spray, be prepared for the bear to become more aggressive due to the spray’s effects wearing off. Keep a safe distance and slowly back away from the area. If you’re in a group, stay together and try to leave the area as a unit. Be aware of any other bears in the area and take necessary precautions to avoid further encounters. Wash your hands and any exposed skin after the encounter to avoid any potential irritation from the bear spray.
