However, strong winds exceeding 15 mph (24 km/h) can scatter the call, making it difficult for the moose to locate the source. It’s essential to position yourself in a way that takes advantage of the wind, allowing the call to travel as far as possible.

Optimal Weather Conditions for Moose Calling

While weather conditions can’t be controlled, hunters can adapt their strategies to maximize their chances of success. During clear skies and light winds, use a higher-pitched, more nasal call to mimic the bleat of a calf. This call is more likely to attract a cow moose and her calves. In contrast, during periods of heavy snow or rain, use a deeper, more raspy call to mimic the grunt of a bull moose. This call can be more effective at reaching a moose through the noise of the elements.
