Choosing Effective Bait

When selecting bait for bottle traps, it’s essential to choose something that will attract food fish and trigger them to swim into the trap. Fresh minnows are often the best option as they are a primary food source for many species of fish. When using minnows, it’s best to use small ones, around 2-3 inches in length, as they are more likely to be accepted by the target species.

Baiting the Trap

To bait the trap effectively, attach the bait to the end of a piece of twine or fishing line and tie the other end to the inside of the trap. This will allow the bait to be suspended just below the surface of the water, where it can be easily seen by passing fish. When using minnows or other small fish, it’s best to use 2-3 pieces of bait per trap, spaced evenly apart to ensure that the trap is attractive to multiple fish at once.

Using Alternative Bait

While fresh minnows are often the most effective bait, there are times when they may not be available or may not be effective. In these situations, small pieces of fish guts or chicken parts can be used as an alternative. When using fish guts, it’s best to use the freshest possible material and to cut it into small pieces to make it more attractive to the target species. Chicken parts, such as necks or backs, can be used in the same way as fish guts, but they may be more effective for larger species of fish.
