Why Do Bighorn Sheep Prefer Steep Terrain?

Bighorn sheep have evolved to thrive in areas with steep terrain, which offers several advantages. Their cloven hooves are specifically designed to provide traction on rocky surfaces, allowing them to ascend and descend steep slopes with ease. This adaptation enables them to access nutrient-rich food sources, such as alpine meadows and steep-sided mountain ridges. In fact, studies have shown that bighorn sheep can climb slopes with angles as steep as 60 degrees, making them one of the most agile and adaptable ungulates in North America.

Predator Avoidance

Steep terrain also serves as a natural barrier against predators, such as mountain lions and coyotes. Bighorn sheep can use their agility and knowledge of the terrain to evade these predators, often by leading them into areas with steep drop-offs or narrow ledges. This strategic use of terrain allows them to minimize their risk of predation and maintain a relatively low mortality rate, despite their limited defense mechanisms. In areas with steep terrain, bighorn sheep can also use their horns to defend themselves, charging at predators or using their horns to deflect attacks.

Nutrient-Rich Food Sources

Steep terrain is often characterized by unique microclimates that support a diverse range of plant species. Bighorn sheep can exploit these microclimates to access nutrient-rich food sources, such as grasses, forbs, and shrubs. By inhabiting areas with steep terrain, they can take advantage of these resources, which are often unavailable in more low-lying areas. This allows them to maintain a healthy body condition, even in areas with limited forage availability.
