How to determine if your decoys are still effective?

Effective Layout and Spreads

When evaluating the effectiveness of your decoys, it’s essential to consider the layout and spread. A well-designed spread with full-body decoys can mimic a realistic flock, drawing in geese from a distance. Aim for a spread of 12 to 15 decoys, with a minimum of 3 to 5 flags placed in the middle of the spread. This will create a visual anchor that geese can key in on.

Flag Placement and Movement

Flags are a critical component of an effective goose spread. Place them 10 to 15 feet apart, with the flag in the middle of the spread serving as the primary anchor. Move the flags slightly every 10 to 15 minutes to create a sense of movement and life. This will help to draw geese in and convince them that your decoys are a real flock.

Observing Traffic Patterns

To determine if your decoys are effective, observe the traffic patterns of the geese. Are they flying low and close to the decoys, or are they circling and hesitant to land? Adjust your layout and flag placement to create a more inviting environment for the geese. For example, if the geese are circling, try adding a few more decoys to the outside of the spread to create a sense of depth and make the flock appear larger. If they’re flying low, try reducing the number of decoys and flags to create a more subtle presentation.
