Terrain funnels, also known as pinch points or choke points, are areas where a narrow path of land funnels deer movement through a more confined space, often along a ridgeline, creek bed, or edge. These funnels typically occur where two or more terrain features converge, such as a valley and a hillside. To identify terrain funnels, hunters should look for areas with a combination of topography and habitat features that funnel deer movement.

Identifying Peak Rut Funnels

During the peak rut, mature bucks tend to concentrate their movements in areas with high concentrations of does. Look for funnels that intersect with areas of high doe concentration, such as food sources, waterholes, or bedding areas. In particular, focus on funnels that connect areas with high-quality forage during the fall, such as corn and soybean fields, or areas with abundant mast production, like oak and beech stands. Some of the most productive funnels can be found within 100-200 yards of these high-value areas.

Hunting the Funnels

To maximize the effectiveness of terrain funnels during the peak rut, hunters should focus on positioning themselves near the narrowest points of the funnel, where deer are most likely to move through. Aim to be within 20-30 yards of the funnel’s edge, where you can intercept deer as they move through the area. Consider using stands or blinds that allow for silent entry and exit, such as ladder stands or ground blinds. Additionally, be prepared to move quickly and quietly to set up near the funnel, as deer can be highly sensitive to human presence during the peak rut.
