How many stakes are needed for a secure tarp shelter?

Choosing the Right Stakes

When selecting stakes for your tarp shelter, look for sturdy, corrosion-resistant materials that can withstand harsh weather conditions. For a typical tarp size of 9x9 feet, you’ll need stakes that are at least 1 inch in diameter and 18 inches long. Metal stakes are ideal, but if you’re using a more compact tarp (e.g., a 7x7 foot space blanket), smaller stakes may suffice.

Configuring the Stakes

To secure your tarp effectively, you’ll want to create a sturdy framework of stakes and knots. Start by driving two stakes into the ground at a 45-degree angle, about 3 feet apart. These stakes will serve as the primary anchors for your tarp. Next, drive two more stakes at 90-degree angles to the first two, spaced evenly apart. These stakes will help distribute the wind load and prevent the tarp from flapping in the wind.
