Choosing the Right Plant Material

In contrast, cedar and cypress roots are best harvested during the winter months when they are at their driest, making them easier to split and shape.

Preparing the Fibers

For willow branches, it’s essential to soak the strips in water for about 24 hours to rehydrate them and make them more pliable. For cedar and cypress roots, the strips can be dried and split using a mallet or a stone tool to create thin, flexible fibers.
