Building a Sandbag Wall

A sandbag wall is an effective barrier against sandstorms, especially when constructed with a slope to prevent sand from accumulating on top. A 3-foot high and 10-foot long wall can protect a single person from strong winds. To build a sandbag wall, start by digging a shallow trench for the base, then fill the trench with compacted sand for a stable foundation. Place sandbags on top of the trench, overlapping each bag by about 6 inches and packing them tightly with a foot or a heavy object. A sandbag wall can be reinforced with wooden or metal stakes and a tarpaulin or plastic sheet on top for extra protection.

Tarpaulin Shelter

A tarpaulin shelter is another effective option for sandstorm protection, especially when set up in a pre-existing structure or a natural shelter like a cave. To set up a tarpaulin shelter, start by securing the tarp to a sturdy frame or a group of stakes driven into the ground. Make sure the tarp is tightly secured and the edges are folded over to prevent sand from entering. A 12-foot by 16-foot tarp can provide adequate protection for a group of people, and can be reinforced with weights or sandbags to prevent it from being blown away.

Additional Safety Measures

In addition to building a sandbag wall or setting up a tarpaulin shelter, there are several other safety measures that can be taken to protect against sandstorms. These include wearing protective gear such as goggles and a dust mask, staying indoors during the storm, and keeping windows and doors sealed to prevent sand from entering. It’s also essential to stay informed about weather conditions and to have a plan in place in case of an emergency.
