Preparing the Signal Fire

To ensure the effectiveness of smoke signals, maintain the fire continuously, adding fuel as needed to keep the smoke column strong. Timing is also crucial, as smoke signals are most effective during the day, when they can be seen from a distance. Aim to signal during the peak hours of visibility, typically between 10 am and 2 pm, when the sun is high in the sky and the air is clear. To conserve energy, signal for short bursts, taking breaks to rest and rehydrate.
