Lek Formation and Mating Strategy

Sharp-Tailed Grouse leks typically form in areas with high visibility and low vegetation cover, such as open fields, prairies, or areas with scattered trees. A dominant male will establish a lek site, which can range from 0.1 to 10 acres in size, and defend it against other males. The lek’s location is critical, as the dominant male will often claim a spot with a commanding view of the surrounding area.

Courtship Displays and Dominance

During the breeding season, typically in early spring, males will engage in complex courtship displays to attract females and establish dominance among other males. These displays include a “dance,” which involves a series of rapid, high-arcing flights, as well as a “boom,” a low-pitched drumming sound produced by the male’s feet. Males will also engage in mock battles, where they will engage in aggressive displays, including fanning their tails and displaying their brightly colored air sacs. The dominant male will occupy the center of the lek, while subordinate males will occupy the periphery.

Importance of Lek Size and Location

Lek size and location play a critical role in the mating success of Sharp-Tailed Grouse. A larger lek can support more males and females, increasing the chances of successful mating. However, a lek that is too large may become fragmented, leading to reduced mating success. The location of the lek is also crucial, as it must be easily visible to potential mates, but also protected from predators and harsh weather conditions. In areas with high human activity, such as agricultural fields or roads, leks may be disrupted, leading to reduced mating success and population decline.
