Assessing Entrance Size

To assess the entrance size, look for the following characteristics: the presence of a natural rock formation or ledge that can serve as a threshold, a relatively flat and wide area at the entrance, and minimal overhang or obstruction. When measuring the entrance, use a tape measure or stick to accurately record the height and width. Consider the use of a makeshift ramp or stairs if the entrance is too steep or narrow. For example, if you have a rope and a few sticks, you can create a makeshift ramp to facilitate access.

Alternative Shelter Options

If the cave entrance is too small or inaccessible, consider alternative shelter options, such as a nearby rock overhang, a group of trees with a natural canopy, or a simple lean-to structure built from natural materials. These options may not offer the same level of protection as a cave, but they can still provide essential shelter from the elements. In a survival situation, adaptability and creativity are key to finding a safe and comfortable shelter.
