Why do some survival experts dismiss the value of tree moss?

The Myth of Moss Direction

The notion that moss only grows on the north side of trees is a widespread myth that has been perpetuated in the survival community. While it is true that moss does tend to grow more frequently on the north side of trees in temperate climates, this is not because the moss has a built-in compass that always grows northward. In reality, moss grows on any surface that provides consistent moisture and shade. This means that moss can grow on the south side of a tree in a shaded area, or on the east or west side of a tree in a consistently moist environment.

Moss as a Navigation Tool

Despite the myth surrounding moss direction, it can still be a useful tool for navigation in the right circumstances. By identifying the types of trees and the environment in which they grow, you can use moss as a secondary indicator of direction. For example, in a forest with a lot of coniferous trees, moss is more likely to grow on the north side of the trees because conifers tend to grow in cooler, more shaded areas. However, this is not a reliable method for navigation and should not be relied upon in critical survival situations.

Moss as a General Indicator of Environment

In addition to its potential use as a navigation tool, moss can also serve as a general indicator of the environment. By observing the types of trees and the amount of moss growing on them, you can get a sense of the local climate and ecosystem. For example, in a dry, desert environment, moss is likely to be scarce or absent altogether. In a humid, tropical environment, moss may grow profusely on the trunks and branches of trees.
