However, during the mid-day, when water temperatures rise above 60°F, shovelers become more energetic and start to forage in shallower waters, making them more vulnerable to hunters.

They prefer shallow waters with dense vegetation, such as cattails, sedges, and aquatic grasses. These areas provide ideal conditions for foraging and nesting, and are often associated with warmer water temperatures. Look for areas with slow-moving water, such as marshes, bays, or river mouths, as these are likely to attract shovelers during the mid-day.

Hunting Techniques

To capitalize on shoveler activity during the mid-day, use hunting techniques that take advantage of their increased energy and vulnerability. Try using decoys that mimic the appearance of shovelers, and position them in areas with dense vegetation. Use calls that imitate the sound of female shovelers, as males are attracted to the sound of their mates. Additionally, consider using a blind or hide, as shovelers have a keen sense of vision and can be easily spotted from a distance.
