Assessing the Terrain

When navigating dense swamp environments, it’s essential to assess the terrain and identify landmarks such as ridges, waterways, and tree patterns. This can be achieved by studying the landscape from a safe distance or by using a drone to gather aerial footage. For every 100 feet of travel, take 1-minute breaks to observe your surroundings and get your bearings.

Navigating Through the Swamp

When traversing through the swamp, create a route by following the edges of waterways or using existing game trails. These routes often provide the most stable and predictable terrain. To minimize the risk of encountering water moccasins, avoid wading through the water and instead look for shallow areas or stepping stones. If you must cross a waterway, use a sturdy branch or board and test its stability before stepping on it.

Building a Platform Shelter

To protect yourself from leeches, mosquitoes, and other hazards, build a platform shelter at least 6 feet off the ground. Use sturdy trees or poles and lash them together using rope or twine. Cover the platform with a tarp or a bed of leaves, and add a lean-to structure for additional protection. When building the shelter, avoid areas with standing water or where water tends to collect.
