Warning Signs in the Ocean

A tsunami can cause the ocean to behave in unpredictable ways before it strikes. One of the most obvious signs is a sudden, unexpected withdrawal of the ocean, often referred to as a “drawback.” This can expose large areas of beach and sometimes even allow people to walk out to the water’s edge for short distances. Another sign is a sudden drop in water level, often referred to as a “drawdown.” This can be caused by the tsunami wave pulling water away from the coast before it crashes back in. Additionally, a loud roar or rumble, often compared to the sound of a freight train, can be heard before the tsunami wave arrives.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Earthquakes that occur along the coast or offshore can be a precursor to a tsunami. If you are in a coastal area and an earthquake strikes, pay close attention to your surroundings. If the earthquake is strong enough to cause damage or trigger a tsunami warning, drop, cover, and hold on to a sturdy object. If you are in a coastal area and an earthquake occurs that is strong enough to knock you off your feet, immediately seek higher ground. Do not wait for a tsunami warning or for the wave to arrive.

Evacuating to High Ground

If you are in a coastal area and a tsunami is imminent, your priority is to get to higher ground as quickly as possible. Know the evacuation routes in your area and practice them regularly. If you are in a coastal town or city, look for signs that indicate the evacuation route. In general, you want to move at least 100 feet above sea level and as far inland as possible. If you are in a mobile home, do not try to evacuate in the home – instead, leave immediately and go to higher ground on foot.
