A 100-200 watt solar panel can charge a deep cycle battery, providing enough power to run a ham radio for several hours. This setup is ideal for a prepper’s emergency kit or a remote location.

Choosing the Right Equipment

When selecting solar panels for a ham radio setup, look for panels with a high efficiency rating (15-20%) and a suitable voltage rating (12-24V). A 12V deep cycle battery can store excess energy and provide a stable power source for the ham radio. A 200Ah battery, for example, can provide up to 16 hours of runtime for a 10W ham radio.

Powering a Ham Radio with Solar Power

To power a 10W ham radio with solar power, you’ll need a minimum of 150-200 watts of solar panel capacity. This can be achieved with two 60-80 watt solar panels connected in parallel. To maximize power output, use a solar charge controller to regulate the charge to the deep cycle battery.
