When it comes to hunting sage grouse, the key is to use a choke that can effectively pattern your shot at close to medium ranges, as the birds are often flushed at relatively short distances. A full choke is the best choice here, as it produces a tight pattern and increased effectiveness.

Effective Range for Full Choke

A full choke is typically effective at ranges between 20 to 40 yards. This allows you to take advantage of the birds’ tendency to flush at close distances, and still be able to accurately place your shot. For example, at 25 yards, a 12-gauge shotgun with a full choke can produce a 10-inch pattern at the center of a 40x40-inch circle, making it more than sufficient for hunting sage grouse.

Adjusting to Different Situations

While a full choke is the preferred choice, there may be situations where a tighter or looser choke is more suitable. For instance, if you’re hunting in a dense thicket or thick cover, a tighter choke may be necessary to ensure a solid hit. Conversely, if you’re hunting in an open area, a looser choke may be sufficient to take advantage of the extra range.
