What Tools Are Necessary to Build a Swedish Torch?

Choosing the Right Materials

The first step in building a Swedish torch is selecting the right materials. Look for a straight, dry branch about 1-2 inches in diameter and 3-4 feet long for the fireboard. This will serve as the base of your torch. You’ll also need a drill, which can be made from a piece of stringybark or a flexible branch, and a bow, typically created from a flexible branch about 1-2 inches in diameter and 3-4 feet long.

Preparing the Fireboard

To prepare the fireboard, find a suitable notch on the top, about 1 inch deep and 1 inch wide. This notch will be used to drill a hole for the fire. Use a drill to create several holes in the fireboard, about 1/8 inch in diameter and spaced about 1 inch apart. This will help to create a series of small sparks when you apply friction to the drill.

Building the Torch

To build the torch, create a notch on the bottom of the fireboard, about 1 inch deep and 1 inch wide. This notch will be used to hold the tinder in place. Place a few dry leaves or small twigs in the notch, and then place the drill on top of the fireboard. Use the bow to apply pressure and friction to the drill, creating sparks and eventually an ember. Once you have a small flame, gently blow on it to help it grow into a larger fire.
