When selecting a thermometer for monitoring body temperature while hiking, look for a digital model that can take readings orally, rectally, or under the armpit. Oral thermometers are generally the most convenient but may not provide accurate readings for individuals who are severely dehydrated or have a low body temperature. Rectal thermometers are more accurate and can be less affected by external factors, but they can be more uncomfortable to use.

Taking Accurate Readings

To take an accurate reading, place the thermometer at the correct location and wait for the recommended amount of time. For oral readings, this is usually 1-2 minutes, while rectal readings take 30 seconds to 1 minute. Take readings at the same location each time to ensure consistency, and avoid touching the thermometer to your lips or tongue, as this can contaminate the device. Use a thermometer that can display the temperature in both Fahrenheit and Celsius, as this will make it easier to interpret the reading.

Interpreting and Acting on Readings
