Identifying Hazardous Situations

When a hazardous situation arises, stay informed by tuning into local news and emergency alerts. Pay attention to evacuation orders, shelter locations, and instructions for decontamination. If caught outside, quickly assess your surroundings to determine the best course of action. In the event of a nuclear fallout, be aware of the time-weighted dose, which is the radiation exposure over a given period. A dose of 500 millisieverts (mSv) or more can cause severe health effects.

Sheltering Techniques

To shelter in place effectively, choose a room or area with the fewest windows, such as a basement or interior room on the lowest floor. Use a minimum of 6 inches (15 cm) of solid material, such as concrete or brick, to block radiation. In the absence of a basement, use a shelter kit or create a makeshift shelter using blankets and a tarp. If using a portable shelter, consider the KI (potassium iodide) dosage, which should be taken 1 hour before radiation exposure and every 24 hours thereafter to prevent thyroid absorption of radioactive iodine.

Decontamination and Post-Exposure Care

After sheltering in place, decontaminate yourself and your shelter using water, soap, and other cleaning agents. Remove contaminated clothing and wash the skin with soap and water. Use a radiation detection device to determine the level of radiation and ensure it is safe to exit the shelter. If exposed to radiation, take KI tablets as directed and seek medical attention if symptoms persist. Monitor your radiation exposure levels and take additional KI tablets as necessary to prevent thyroid damage.
