When designing an off-grid solar system, it’s essential to consider the cable length and type to minimize voltage drop. Voltage drop occurs when the current flowing through a cable causes a reduction in voltage, typically due to resistance in the wire. A 1% voltage drop per 10% of cable length is a common rule of thumb. For example, using a 10 AWG wire with a 50-foot cable will result in a 5% voltage drop, which can lead to a 20% reduction in system performance. To minimize voltage drop, use high-gauge wires (e.g., 6 AWG or larger) and keep cable lengths as short as possible.

Battery Wiring Interconnects

When wiring batteries together, it’s crucial to maintain a balanced system to prevent overcharging or undercharging individual batteries. The recommended maximum distance between batteries is 25 feet, and the maximum wire length is 10% of the battery bank size. For instance, in a 24-battery bank, the maximum wire length is 2.4 feet for each interconnect. Use heavy-duty battery wires with a minimum of 6 AWG and follow the recommended gauge increase for each additional battery.

Cable Selection and Installation

To ensure reliable and efficient operation, use cables specifically designed for off-grid solar systems. Look for cables with a high temperature rating, low voltage drop, and a durable insulation material.
