Can You Get Federal Tax Credits for DIY Solar Projects?

Eligibility and Requirements

The federal solar tax credit, also known as the Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit, allows homeowners to claim a tax credit of 30% of the total cost of their solar panel system, including installation costs. To qualify for the full 30% tax credit, the solar panel system must be installed by a qualified contractor or the homeowner must meet specific requirements. Homeowners who install their solar panel system themselves must have a signed affidavit from a licensed electrical contractor stating that the system was installed in accordance with all applicable electrical codes. The system must also be installed on the homeowner’s primary residence or a secondary residence that is used as a residence for at least 9 months out of the year.

Documentation and Certification

To claim the tax credit, homeowners must keep detailed records of their solar panel system’s installation costs, including receipts and invoices for the solar panels, inverters, and installation labor. Homeowners must also obtain a certification from a qualified engineer or architect stating that the solar panel system meets the requirements of the tax credit. The certification must include the system’s maximum DC power output, the type and model of the solar panels, and the type and model of the inverter.

IRS and Tax Credit Forms

Homeowners must complete Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits, when filing their tax return to claim the solar tax credit. The credit can be claimed on the homeowner’s federal income tax return for the year in which the solar panel system was installed. Homeowners must also keep a copy of their certification and other supporting documentation in case of an audit.
