Can You Use Regular Hiking Packs for Hunting?

Choosing the Right Frame Type

When selecting a regular hiking pack for hunting, consider the frame type. Internal frame packs are generally more comfortable and allow for better load distribution, making them suitable for longer hunting trips. However, they may be bulkier and less versatile than external frame packs, which are better suited for day hikes or shorter trips. Look for packs with a sturdy, aluminum or fiberglass frame that can support the weight of your gear and a possible trophy.

Load Hauling and Organization

Regular hiking packs often lack the specialized load-hauling features found in hunting packs, such as meat shelves or game bags. To overcome this, consider using a separate game bag or attaching a meat shelf to the pack’s exterior. This will allow you to transport larger game or gear more efficiently. When loading the pack, prioritize the heaviest items, such as water and ammunition, at the bottom and distribute lighter gear, like clothing and first aid supplies, towards the top.

Day Pack vs Multi-Day Hunting

For day hunting trips, a smaller, lighter hiking pack with a daypack configuration may be sufficient. Look for packs with a capacity of around 20-30 liters, which should be enough to carry essentials like water, snacks, and a first aid kit. For multi-day hunting trips, consider a larger pack with a capacity of 40-60 liters, which will allow you to carry more gear, including a meat shelf and game bag. When choosing a pack for multi-day hunting, prioritize comfort, durability, and load-hauling capacity.
