Local governments often adopt the International Residential Code (IRC) and International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as their building codes, which include guidelines for off-grid construction. For example, the IRC Section R402.2.4 requires that new buildings be designed to be suitable for off-grid operation if the owner intends to disconnect from the grid.

For instance, the IECC requires that new buildings meet minimum energy efficiency standards, including the use of insulation, windows, and doors. In terms of water collection, a building may need to be designed to collect and store rainwater, or to use a well or other water source. Local building codes may also dictate the minimum size and type of electrical system required for off-grid operation.

Examples of Off-Grid Buildings

Some notable examples of off-grid buildings include the Passive House, which is designed to be extremely energy efficient, and the Earthship, which uses natural and recycled materials to minimize waste and reliance on non-renewable energy sources. These buildings often include features such as solar panels, wind turbines, and rainwater harvesting systems. Local building codes may require that off-grid buildings meet certain performance standards, such as a minimum level of energy efficiency or a minimum amount of on-site renewable energy generation.
