This nutrient-rich waste can be composted or applied directly to soil to promote healthy plant growth and improve soil fertility.

Using Goat Manure in Your Garden

When using goat manure in your garden, it’s essential to follow proper application and composting techniques. A general rule of thumb is to mix 2-3 inches of composted goat manure into the top 6-8 inches of soil. For direct application, spread a 1-2 inch layer of fresh goat manure and till it into the soil. To compost goat manure, maintain a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of 20:1 by adding materials like straw, hay, or shredded newspaper to balance the mixture. Compost at an internal temperature of 131°F to 140°F (55°C to 60°C) for 15-30 days to kill pathogens and weed seeds.

Choosing the Right Goat Breed for Homestead Use

When deciding which goat breed to raise on your homestead, consider factors like milk production, meat quality, and manure production. Dairy breeds like Nubians and LaManchas produce rich, nutrient-dense manure due to their high milk production. Meat breeds like Kiko and Boer goats produce less manure overall, but still offer valuable nutrients for gardening. Fencing and feeding considerations should also be taken into account when selecting a breed.
