When responding to a lightning strike victim, it’s essential to prioritize their safety and assess their condition carefully. The American Heart Association recommends that you call 911 or your local emergency number before starting any first aid procedures, especially if the victim is unconscious or not breathing. If the victim is in cardiac arrest, begin CPR immediately, using the 30:2 compression-to-ventilation ratio.

Burns and Neurological Assessment

Lightning strikes can cause severe burns, including second- and third-degree burns, which may appear as blisters or charred skin. Assess the burn area for any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge, and apply a clean, dry dressing to cover the wound. Additionally, monitor the victim’s neurological status, checking for signs of confusion, disorientation, or loss of motor function, such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected limbs.

Storm Safety and Prevention

Preventing lightning strikes is often more effective than responding to them. When in areas prone to lightning storms, such as near water bodies or in open spaces, seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building or hard-topped vehicle. Avoid being in metal structures, such as golf clubs, bicycles, or fences, as these can conduct electricity. If caught outside, crouch low with your feet together, minimizing your body’s surface area and avoiding contact with any conductive objects.
