Effective Pre-Filtration Techniques

To effectively pre-filter water before UV treatment, consider using a combination of 1-micron nominal absolute (NA) filter and a sediment filter. The sediment filter should be designed to remove particles as small as 5-micron in size. For example, a 5-micron sediment filter followed by a 1-micron NA ceramic filter can provide effective pre-filtration for most UV systems. This combination can remove up to 99.99% of particles and sediment, ensuring the UV system can effectively disinfect the water.

UV System Design Considerations

When selecting a UV system, consider the flow rate, UV intensity, and chamber design. A well-designed UV system should have a flow rate of at least 10 gallons per minute (GPM) and a UV intensity of 40 milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²). The chamber design should be optimized for effective UV light transmission and minimal dead space. For example, a UV system with a chamber volume of 12 liters and a UV intensity of 40 mW/cm² can effectively disinfect up to 20,000 gallons of water.
