Choosing the Right Trap Size

When selecting a trap for opossums, it’s essential to consider the animal’s size and behavior. A 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch (6-13 mm) mesh trap is ideal as it prevents opossums from getting their heads caught in the trap. This size trap is also effective for controlling opossum populations, as it allows for a quick and humane kill.

Trap Door Spring and Trigger Sensitivity

A cage trap with a door spring of 6-8 pounds (2.7-3.6 kg) is suitable for opossums. This spring tension is strong enough to ensure the trap door remains closed but not so strong that it injures the animal. Additionally, a trigger sensitivity of 5-7 pounds (2.3-3.2 kg) is recommended to prevent accidental triggering.

Setting Traps in Opossum Habitats

Opossums are primarily nocturnal and are most active at night, so it’s best to set traps in areas where they are likely to frequent, such as near food sources, water, and shelter. Traps should be placed 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) away from these areas to prevent opossums from feeling threatened or territorial. Baiting the trap with food such as fruit or vegetables can also increase the likelihood of a successful catch.
