Should I remain in my car during rising water?

April 6, 2026

Quick Answer

Remain in your car if possible, as it provides a relatively safe barrier from swift water and debris. However, if the water is rising rapidly or the car is being swept away, get out and seek higher ground immediately.

When to Stay in Your Car

If you find yourself in a situation where rising water is threatening your vehicle, stay inside if the water is:

  • 1-2 feet deep: This is the safest depth for most vehicles to handle.
  • The water is not moving at a rate that’s pulling your vehicle towards a hazard, such as a bridge or culvert.

When to Leave Your Car

However, if you encounter any of the following situations, leave your car as soon as possible:

  • Water is above your vehicle’s doors: This indicates the water is too deep for your car to handle.
  • Water is rising quickly: Flash floods can increase water levels rapidly, making it harder to escape.
  • The water is murky or discolored: This can hide hazards, such as strong currents or submerged objects.

Finding Safe Ground

Once you leave your vehicle, quickly assess your surroundings and look for higher ground. Move at least 100 feet away from the water’s edge to avoid being swept away by a strong current. If you cannot see a safe route ahead, go to a nearby building or elevated area.
