Purifying Water with Boiled Water

Heating water is essential for purifying water in a survival scenario. When water is heated to a rolling boil for 1-3 minutes, depending on altitude and water quality, it kills most bacteria, viruses, and protozoa that can cause waterborne illnesses. This process is known as boiling water. To create a makeshift vessel for heating water without cookware, you can use a pit or a hole in the ground. Dig a shallow pit, about 6-8 inches deep and 12-18 inches wide. Place a rock or a piece of bark in the center of the pit and pour water over it to create a makeshift “stove”.

Creating a Solar Still

Another method for heating water is to create a solar still. This device uses the sun’s heat to evaporate water, which then condenses and collects in a container. To create a solar still, you’ll need a container, a rock or a piece of bark, and a small hole in the ground. Dig a shallow pit, about 6-8 inches deep and 12-18 inches wide. Place the container in the center of the pit and pour water over it. Place the rock or bark over the hole and weigh it down with another rock to create a makeshift “condenser”.

Improvised Water Heaters

In a survival scenario, you can also use improvised water heaters, such as a fire-heated rock or a solar oven. To create a fire-heated rock, build a fire and place a rock in the center. When the rock is hot, carefully place it in a container filled with water. The water will heat up quickly, allowing you to purify it. A solar oven is a simple device that uses the sun’s heat to cook food and heat water. To create a solar oven, you’ll need a container, a piece of cardboard, and some tape. Cut a hole in the center of the cardboard and place it over the container. Use tape to secure the cardboard in place and place the container in direct sunlight. The sun’s heat will cook the food and heat the water inside the container.
