Tourniquet or pressure bandage: Which is more effective for severe bleeding?

A tourniquet is a critical tool in any prepper’s EDC loadout. It’s designed to control severe bleeding by occluding the limb’s blood supply, but it requires proper application to avoid complications. When applying a tourniquet, it’s essential to follow the CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) protocol: apply the tourniquet as close to the wound as possible, then tighten it in a figure-eight pattern until the bleeding stops. The tourniquet should be checked every 2 hours to ensure it’s not causing damage to the limb.

Pressure Bandage Techniques

While pressure bandages are not as effective as tourniquets for severe bleeding, they can still be used to control bleeding in situations where a tourniquet is not available or cannot be applied. To use a pressure bandage effectively, apply it to the wound with firm pressure, then wrap the bandage in a figure-eight pattern to maintain pressure. Apply additional bandages to increase pressure, but be cautious not to cut off circulation to the limb. Research suggests that for pressure bandages to be effective, they must be applied with a minimum of 6-8 pounds of pressure per square inch (PSI).

While both tourniquets and pressure bandages can control bleeding, they differ in their application and effectiveness. A tourniquet can control bleeding in a matter of seconds, while a pressure bandage may take longer to achieve the same effect. Additionally, tourniquets are more effective in limb-threatening situations, such as severe arterial bleeding. When choosing between a tourniquet and a pressure bandage, it’s essential to consider the severity of the wound and the situation. A tourniquet should be used in severe bleeding situations, while a pressure bandage may be used for less severe wounds or as a temporary measure until a tourniquet can be applied.
